3 Simple Guitar Warm Ups Youll Never Outgrow Megan L. Do you play guitar warm ups before you practice guitar? Here, teacher Kirk R. shares three guitar exercises that are perfect for players of all levels. There are literally thousands of exercises and warm ups for the guitar. There are some that are great for beginners who are just getting used to having their fingers on the guitar, and some that are designed to challenge and grow the technique of seasoned players. But who has time to learn thousands of guitar exercises? Wouldnt you rather learn a few simple routines that will continue to push your technique as long as you play the guitar? Here are the only three guitar warm ups youll ever need! Each of these guitar exercises will benefit players of any level. Top 3 Guitar Warm Ups Guitar Warm Up 1: Left Hand String Skipping This is one of the simplest guitar warm ups that I use every day. It begins with your first, or index, finger on the first fret of the lowest string. Youll then hop the same finger to the fifth string, also on the first fret. Continue moving up one string at a time until you reach the first, or highest string and then return, one string at a time, to the lowest. Repeat this on the first four frets each time with a different finger. This is a great technical guitar exercise that may seem too simple for more experienced guitarists at first. If you think it’s too easy, make sure to pay attention to the articulation and connection of each note. Play it slowly and try to make one note fully connect to the next, with no gap in the sound caused by lifting the finger too early. Guitar Warm Up 2: Chromatic Scales This is another one of my favorite guitar warm ups that I still practice  every day. Not only do I currently use it, but Ive been playing chromatic scales since my first guitar lesson when I was a kid. It can be played in a variety of ways, but lets start with the simplest. It can be played on any string, but here Ill use the second string as an example. We begin on the open note followed by the notes of frets 1, 2, 3, and 4 played with the index, middle, ring, and pinky fingers, respectively. After reaching the highest note, follow the same pattern back down. Its simple, uses all the left hand fingers, and it’s easy to memorize: sounds like a useful warm up to me! Once you’re comfortable playing this on every string, you can combine the patterns and move from the low E all the way to the G# on the fourth fret of the first string. One hiccup in the pattern happens between the third and second strings. If you play both the fourth fret, third string, and the open second string (marked with parentheses below), you’ll have two B naturals. The solution is simply to play one or the other. I like to change it up to keep on my toes. You havent had enough chromatic scales, you say? There are plenty more permutations of this same basic pattern. The next step is to continue beyond the high G# all the way to the 12th fret E on the first string. You can do this in a couple of ways, but my recommendation is to shift up a single string from the first to the 12th fret (three groupings of finger 1, 2, 3 and 4). I like to do six complete scales (low open E to high 12th fret E) each time shifting on a different string. As with all shifts, pay close attention to your left forearm. Once youve mastered all of these guitar exercises, try playing them in parallel octaves. Guitar Warm Up 3: Accent Patterns If youve been trying out the guitar exercises thus far, your left hand could probably use a rest. This warm up is designed to give you better control of the accenting of notes regardless of how theyre struck and what the notes before and after them are doing. The concept is quite simple. Youre going to play a group of 2 to 10 notes with certain ones accented, or played more loudly, and the rest more quietly. Lets begin with an easy one. Play a group of two notes, accenting the first and playing the second more softy. Continue repeating this pattern until it is comfortable and can be done without focusing on it. Next lets reverse our pattern, accenting the second note of the pair. This may seem like a small change, but remember youll be using different muscles to accent this second note. For players using a pick, this will change the accent from happening on a down stroke (the natural accent), to happening on the up stroke. If playing without a pick, keep your pattern of right hand fingers the same (imim or mimi) so that a different finger is accented. Additionally, use unusual right hand patterns, such as all the same finger, or all down strokes. These simple ideas can produce a variety of helpful patterns that, if practiced regularly, will give you the flexibility to accent the notes you want regardless of the finger or direction of the stroke forced by the context. Here are a few more suggested patterns to get you started. Remember to always make sure that your notes are an even length and that playing the patterns comfortably and accurately is more important than playing them fast and impressively. ACT Math Strategy Series [Part 3 of 3] ACT SAT Prep and College Admissions Blog Math is a subject that most students either love or hate. In either case, preparing thoroughly for the Math section of the ACT is important in order to do your best. If math is not your strongest subject, building a solid foundation of understanding will be important for maintaining a decent overall score. If math comes easily for you, reviewing will still be important in order to fill in the gaps in your knowledge, especially if you want your score to truly reflect your ability. Either way, this series of posts gives you valuable strategies that will help you maximize your score. This post is the third of a three part series that looks at strategies for acing the ACT Math section. Strategy #7: Recognize Obvious Shortcuts Often problems that appear to involve laborious calculations will actually be quicker to answer if you recognize shortcuts. For example, 256/64 is obviously 4 if you know your powers of 2. Other problems might be quicker to solve if you merely approximate the answer, which may get you close enough to recognize the correct answer from among the given choices. The more you practice with the specific types of problems that show up on the ACT, the more easily you will be able to recognize shortcuts when they are available (and the less likely you will be to waste time looking for them when they don’t exist). Strategy #8: Check Obvious Answers It doesn’t hurt to glance at the answer choices before attempting to solve a problem and check for any that appear to be obviously correct or obviously incorrect. Of course, if an answer choice appears to be obviously correct you should still verify it for yourself, as well as confirm that the other choices are not correct. Conversely, if an answer is obviously incorrect, you can eliminate it, which can make it easier to identify the correct one. Strategy #9: Use Strategic Guessing On the ACT there is no penalty for guessing, so there is no reason to not answer every problem. Guessing works best if you can stack the odds in your favor by eliminating as many incorrect answer choices as possible. On some problems you may be able to guess and check. If the answer is a number, it makes sense to guess the middle one first, because if it doesn’t work you may be able to tell if you need to go higher or lower. This will often be faster than starting at the highest number and going down or starting at the lowest number and going up. Question: What does it mean when a college states that they have Holistic Admissions? ? Brief: When a college advertises that they have holistic admissions it means that they will consider the entire student not just one grade or test score. Answer When a college or university states that they have a holistic admissions process it means that they will consider every aspect of the application and applicant. This includes a student’s grades and GPA, especially grades in the field of study the student wants to major in (assuming they are declaring a major as a freshman). It also means they will consider test scores and may take scores from both the SAT and the ACT and might also consider ‘super scoring’. The college’s admissions department will also focus on the student’s various AP courses, and look heavily into the student’s personal essay, whether its on the Common Application or provided directly from the university our private Orange County college admissions consultants are here to assist you through the application process. 1. The Application Essay Many college prep students focus heavily on their standardized exams and eventually become too tired to focus on their personal essay or, alternatively, simply dont spend time on the essay because they feel its not that important. In fact, universities that advertise holistic admissions will heavily view the personal essay. Students might have excellent test scores and endless AP classes but still not be admitted. A poorly written application essay is a common reason for rejection. How Should I Start My College Essays?). 2. Standardized Tests Students shouldn’t be fooled into thinking that, because a college advertises holistic admissions, test scores aren’t paramount. Anyone applying to a large university should be prepared to achieve an SAT or ACT score well within the acceptable range of the colleges ‘average admitted students’. Holistic admissions means accepting everything, which definitely includes standardized exams! The exception includes small liberal arts colleges that will sometimes advertise that the personal essay is worth much more than grades and standardized test scores. To be on the safe side, students are advised to consult the website of the specific university to ensure they understand how much their personal essay and test scores are weighted. 3. The Individual Universities with holistic admissions will often look at the individual applicant as a unique person as opposed to a number. This is a benefit for nearly every applicant because it gives them a chance to stand out as a talented and important member of their high school community who will later become a unique and contributing member to their college campus. For instance, did a student go out of their way to take AP Psychology because they wanted to later become a social worker or therapist? Did the student hire a special tutor for AP Art History because they want to be an archaeologist or travel the world to learn about different cultures? Does the student participate in team sports because they have a passion for Kinesiology? Any time a student finds out that a university uses holistic admissions, they should know they have a chance to stand out and demonstrate theyre a well-rounded individual (READ: 5 Things to do Before You Go Away to College). Bottom Line Although holistic admissions are widely used and are a positive aspect of the university application process, applicants should be aware that their test scores and GPA will still be a huge and important part of the process. In many ways, colleges and universities will use test scores and grades as a way to narrow down the amount of applications that receive careful consideration. Many large public universities will only consider applicants if they meet the minimum test score/GPA requirements. However, it’s important to know that each universitys admissions process is confidential, meaning any strategic planning is only an educated speculation. Students are advised to apply to a mixture of schools including large public research universities, small private schools, and liberal arts colleges. Regardless of how universities choose their applicants, the more universities a student applies to, the better chance they will have of being accepted to at least one of the schools on their lis t. If you’re trying to encourage your class to read, you can’t preach what you don’t practice. Choose a couple of books your students might enjoy so you can start the year with lots of exciting recommendations.2. RelaxYou’re on vacation - take life at a slower pace! Put down your phone and your computer and treat yourself to some ‘me’ time. Having an awareness of your health, and respecting it, is essential when you work a job that requires constant focus and has you on your feet all day.    Overhaul your diet, schedule in regular exercise and take up a new interest or hobby.3. ConnectTake the time to meet up with teacher friends and colleagues, past and present. You’ll be able to enjoying catching up in a calm environment, share ideas and motivate each other. Getting to know your current colleagues better outside of school will of course improve team relationships and morale.4. ChangeOn reflection, what would you change about the past year? What would you have done differently? If you’re an experienced teacher, do you think you’ve become set in your ways? If some approaches haven’t been as successful as others, try forcing yourself out of your comfort zone. Research some new methods to experiment with in the future.5. Set realistic goalsIt’s all very well setting ambitious targets for the new school year, but it’s more important and effective to set achievable and realistic ones. This reduces the pressure. Outline what teac hing goals you'd like to achieve in the next three, six and twelve months, with details on how you'll approach each one.
